Something's Wrong. Let's Find Out What — and Fix It Right.

A failing septic system is stressful. Whether you’re dealing with a slow drain, a soggy yard, or an alarm you don’t know how to interpret, the uncertainty is often the worst part. At Sonlight Services, we’ve been diagnosing and repairing septic systems across Berks, Lancaster, Lebanon, and Schuylkill Counties since 1997. We’ll tell you exactly what’s wrong, what it takes to fix it, and what it will cost — before any work begins.

Septic repair is one of our core focuses. We invest in it because we know how much it matters to the families and businesses that depend on these systems every day.

Signs You May Need a Septic Repair

Not sure if what you’re experiencing warrants a service call? These are the signs we’d want you to take seriously:

  • Drains backing up in multiple fixtures at once
  • Gurgling sounds from toilets or drains after flushing
  • Sewage odor inside the house or near the tank or field area
  • Wet, spongy, or unusually lush patches of grass above the drain field
  • Septic alarm activating
  • Visible sewage surfacing in the yard
  • Your system hasn’t been inspected in several years

When in doubt, a call costs nothing. Waiting on a small problem has a way of turning it into a much larger one.

How Our Septic Repair Process Works

We don’t show up, dig around, and hand you a bill. Here’s what the process actually looks like:

  • Assessment first — We inspect the system, identify the source of the problem, and explain what we found in plain language
  • Clear estimate — You’ll receive a written estimate before any repair work begins. No surprises.
  • Quality repairs — We use durable materials and proper technique. We’re not patching things together to get through the day — we’re fixing them to last.
  • Final walkthrough — Before we leave, we walk you through what was done and what to watch for going forward

Common Septic Problems We Repair

No two systems fail the same way, but most problems fall into recognizable patterns. Here’s what we see most often and what we do about it.

Broken or Deteriorated Baffles

Baffles are the internal components that direct flow inside your tank and prevent solids from reaching your drain field. When they crack or break down — which happens over time, especially in older concrete tanks — solids begin moving where they shouldn’t. We inspect baffles during every service visit and replace them when needed before they cause larger downstream problems.

Damaged or Collapsed Pipes

The lines connecting your home to your tank, and your tank to the drain field, take a beating over the years from ground movement, root intrusion, and simple age. A cracked or collapsed pipe can cause backups inside the home or prevent effluent from reaching the drain field properly. We locate the problem, excavate as needed, and repair or replace the affected section.

Pump and Float Switch Failures

If your system includes a pump chamber — which many modern systems do — the pump and float switches are mechanical components that will eventually need attention. A pump that won’t run or a float stuck in the wrong position can bring your system to a halt. We diagnose the issue, replace the failed component, and test the system before we leave.

Distribution Box Issues

The distribution box is what divides effluent evenly across the sections of your drain field. If it shifts, cracks, or becomes unleveled, one section of the field gets overloaded while the others sit idle. This is one of the more common causes of premature drain field failure — and one of the more preventable ones when caught early.

Tank Cracks and Structural Damage

Concrete tanks can develop cracks over time due to soil movement, settling, or age. Depending on the location and severity, a cracked tank may allow groundwater to infiltrate or untreated effluent to leak out. We assess the damage and determine whether repair or replacement is the right course of action.

Drain Field Stress and Failure

A saturated or failing drain field is one of the more serious septic problems a homeowner can face. In some cases, rest and time are part of the solution. In others, remediation or replacement is necessary. We’ll give you an honest assessment of where your field stands and what your real options are — not just the most expensive path forward.

Frequently Asked Questions About Septic Repairs

How do I know if I need a repair or a full replacement?

That depends entirely on what’s failing and how far the damage has progressed. Many repairs — broken baffles, failed pumps, damaged pipes — are straightforward fixes that extend the life of an otherwise sound system. Full replacement becomes necessary when the tank structure is severely compromised or the drain field has failed beyond recovery. We’ll give you an honest assessment of where your system stands and what makes the most sense for your situation.

How long does a typical septic repair take?

Most repairs are completed in a single visit, though more complex work involving excavation or drain field issues may take longer. We’ll give you a realistic timeline during the assessment so you can plan accordingly.

Will I need a permit for septic repairs in Lancaster or surrounding counties?

It depends on the scope of the work. Minor repairs like replacing a pump or baffle typically don’t require permits, but more significant work involving the tank or drain field may. We’re familiar with local requirements across the counties we serve and will handle the permitting process when it applies.

Can a repaired septic system last as long as a new one?

In many cases, yes. A well-maintained system with timely repairs can serve a home for decades. The key is not letting small problems go unaddressed until they cause broader system failure. Routine pumping and inspections are the best investment you can make in the long-term health of your system.

Do you offer any kind of maintenance plan to help prevent future repairs?

Yes. We offer a membership program designed to keep your system on a proper maintenance schedule and catch developing issues before they become costly repairs. Ask us about enrollment when you schedule your service.

Do you serve my area?

We serve homeowners across Lancaster, PA and the surrounding communities including Berks, Chester, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and Schuylkill Counties. Not sure if you’re in range? Give us a call — we’re happy to confirm.
